“Rhythm at the Crossroads: Where Indian and Contemporary Dance Meet”

with Justine Goussot

ONCE A MONTH
This workshop, built upon years of experimentation in presenting Indian classical dance to Western audiences, invites participants to dive into the beauty of Indian aesthetics, rhythm, and philosophy through a contemporary lens.

The aim is to encounter something beautifully different while remaining grounded in our own roots and identity, exploring how this ancient form resonates within our modern bodies and selves.

Each class begins with a full-body warm-up, enhancing awareness and agility—including often overlooked areas like the hands and face. Participants will then be introduced to specific elements from the Indian dance repertoire, followed by an exploration through improvisation and group composition, gently bridging into contemporary movement.

This workshop is open to all levels and backgrounds.

Justine Goussot
is a French artist and choreographer with a rich multidisciplinary background. She studied classical piano, jazz, musicology, and philosophy, and in 2005 was admitted to the Conservatoire of Bordeaux to pursue contemporary dance and choreography. Her artistic path led her to several Asian countries, where she researched traditional dances such as Kalbelia, Sufi, Vajra, and Bharatanatyam, later specializing in Kathak under Pandit Sri Ravi Misra in Varanasi. She holds the French state diploma in contemporary dance education.

As a performer, she has collaborated with artists such as Alain Michel (music), Carlotta Ikeda (Butoh – Ariadone), Nina Dipla, and Lilo Baur, as well as with opera houses in Bordeaux, Lausanne, and Saint-Étienne. In 2011, she founded La Lali Cie, through which she has created 11 works that blend dance, theatre, music, and science. Her work has been presented on national stages and at international festivals—most recently at Eleusis 2023 – European Capital of Culture—and she regularly collaborates with academic institutions through workshops, performances, and lectures in Greece, Japan, and Ireland.

Continuing to explore the many dimensions of her art, she has performed at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation with Klezmer Yunan, worked as a choreographer for the Greek National Opera's Youth Program, and composed/performed with the theatre group "Austronauts." Deepening her practice in improvisation and live composition, she has taken part in projects such as "Enumérations" by Georges Aperghis (Athens Conservatoire – Onassis Foundation) and most recently "Aizo" by Nefeli Stamatogiannopoulou (Athens & Epidaurus Festival).
