Pilates Matwork

with Nancy Avgeri

Pilates Matwork is a comprehensive and accessible form of exercise that emphasizes core strength, flexibility, and body awareness. Rooted in the foundational principles developed by Joseph Pilates, this method focuses on controlled, mindful movements performed primarily on the floor, using just a mat and your own body weight. It is built around six key principles: concentration, control, centering, precision, breath, and flow, which guide the practitioner toward a more balanced and efficient body.

In a typical class, participants engage in a series of low-impact exercises that target deep stabilizing muscles, especially around the abdomen, lower back, hips, and pelvis. These movements not only tone and strengthen but also help improve posture, coordination, and mobility. Regular practice can lead to a more aligned body, reduced risk of injury, and a greater sense of ease and power in both daily life and other physical activities.

Pilates Matwork is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, from beginners to advanced movers, as the exercises can be easily modified or intensified. It’s particularly beneficial for those recovering from injury, looking to relieve chronic pain, or seeking to improve athletic performance. Whether you're aiming to enhance your body’s functional movement or simply want to feel stronger and more connected to yourself, Pilates Matwork offers a holistic, intelligent approach to movement and well-being.
